Why polished external goes wrong without the right concreter
Polished concrete looks effortless but is the most technically demanding decorative finish on the market. 3 things go wrong when a concreter cuts corners on the process.
First, the grind goes too coarse and the finish reads as exposed aggregate, not polished. The surface has visible stone instead of a soft even sheen. This happens when the concreter skips the progressive grit stages and goes straight to the higher polishing grits.
Second, the densifier is skipped. The densifier (Ashford, Prosoco) reacts with the calcium hydroxide in the concrete to harden the surface. Without it, the surface stays porous, absorbs staining, and the polish does not hold.
Third, the sealer is wrong for outdoor use. Film-forming sealers with a solvent base yellow in SA UV within 12 months. The correct outdoor sealer is penetrating and UV-stable.
The 5-stage polishing process and AS 4586 slip compliance
Stage 1 is the coarse grind (30 grit) to open the surface and remove laitance, any existing sealer, and surface imperfections. The grind depth determines how much aggregate is visible in the finished surface.
Stage 2 is the densifier. Applied to the ground surface, the densifier penetrates and reacts with the concrete chemistry to produce a harder, denser surface that polishes to a higher sheen and is more resistant to abrasion and staining.
Stages 3 progresses through polish grits (80, 200, 400, 800 and sometimes 1500 or 3000 for higher sheen) to achieve the finish level specified. Each grit removes the scratches from the previous stage. The finished surface sheen level is controlled by the final grit.
Stage 4 is the sealer - penetrating for outdoor use, UV-stable, rated for the surface's intended use. Stage 5 is the slip rating test for pool surrounds and wet areas. AS 4586 requires R11 or higher for pool surrounds. Network concreters quote the slip rating as part of the spec.
