The 5 spec lines that drive a driveway quote
1. Slab thickness
100mm is the AS 3727 residential minimum. Dropping to 80mm saves roughly $600 on a 60m2 pour but reduces load capacity by roughly 40%. Visible failure in heavy vehicle driveways at year 2 to 3.
2. Mesh grade
SL72 is the residential standard. Dropping to SL62 saves $300 to $400 on a 60m2 pour. The mesh holds the slab together after cracking; SL62 is inadequate for most residential driveway loads.
3. Mix strength in MPa
25 MPa for plain residential, 32 MPa for decorative or higher-load applications. The concrete delivery docket shows the actual MPa delivered. Network concreters provide the delivery docket as part of the job file.
4. Finish type
Plain, exposed aggregate (stone specified by name and source), stamped (pattern name and brand), or polished (grit progression specified). A quote that says only "concrete" is unverifiable.
5. Control joints
Joint count and spacing (typically 3 to 4m, or 24 to 30 times the slab thickness). Omitting control joints saves $80 to $200. A 60m2 driveway without control joints develops random cracking within the first summer-winter cycle.
When your driveway crosses the $20,000 BWC threshold
Most metro Adelaide driveways at 60m2 in exposed aggregate ($9,500 to $15,500) or stamped ($12,500 to $19,500) plus preparation, crossover work, or additional features cross $20,000 inc GST. When they do, the SA Building Work Contractors Act 1995 requires the concreter to hold a current BWC licence.
The BWC threshold was increased from $12,000 to $20,000 inc GST on 10 November 2025. Projects at or above $20,000 also require the concreter to arrange Builders Warranty Insurance before starting work. The insurance protects you if the concreter dies, disappears, or becomes insolvent within the 5-year structural defects period.
